A work for four dancers—mothers—that explores maternal functioning and dysfunction, while dismantling the ideal of maternal holding within an aesthetic yet disrupted space. The action on stage takes place within a fantastical arena, constructed from a fabric surface stretched from the back curtain into the entire stage. The dancers move on, within, and through this surface.

The fabric is symbolic: it represents an ageless feminine texture; the constant and endless capacity to hold, swaddle and envelop, passed down from mother to daughter as an inevitable inheritance, in an endless chain of intergenerational transmission.

The work seeks to touch upon and reflect a broad range of experiences and mechanisms of action within motherhood, giving voice to sensations and emotions that women and mothers experience on a regular basis, yet which remain underrepresented in culture and in the discourse surrounding femininity and motherhood.
